Mountain Mahogany Community School encourages active parental and family involvement as part of our children’s education experience. Families are asked to volunteer a minimum of 3 hours per month, although many families volunteer more time, and find it a rewarding experience for themselves and their children! Volunteer opportunities include work to be done on campus, off campus, from home, during the school day or any time it is convenient. The volunteer coordinator, Kate Smith, is available to help you find the best way to utilize your talents, interests, and time. On campusClassroom Help: Teachers have sign-ups for help needed during the school day, including gardening, reading to students, knitting, crafts, helping on field trips (parents helping on campus during the school day need to be fingerprinted). Campus Help: Help with festivals and other events; on-going campus improvement projects, such as the library, landscaping, weeding; help in the office, and more. Committee Work: The Volunteer Coordinator can help parents to match their skills with current committee needs. Opportunities include GC committees, Director committees, FOMM committees, and various Parent Council related groups such as Green Thumb, Library, and Enrichment committees. Parents on Campus Alliance: MMCS is currently offering a POCA training program. Parents who wish to volunteer more time on campus, with more regular interaction with the children, are required to complete this training. The faculty and staff are working together with these parents in developing POCA guidelines. Off campus or from homeFundraising: Friends of Mountain Mahogany organizes numerous fundraising activities where parents can donate their volunteer hours, such as making holiday farolitos, helping compile a school cookbook, planning future fundraisers, and staffing tables at community-wide events. Contact FOMM for information on how you can help. Around the Community: Throughout the year, MMCS turns to its family community for assistance with various tasks, such as: distributing flyers, utilizing connections to garner in-kind support, research for special projects, etc. Contact the volunteer coordinator, Kate, to find out what help is needed currently. Work From Home: Many of our parents provide essential behind-the-scenes support for special events and on-going projects, from home. This can include craft materials preparation, data entry, phone-tree help, policy review, sewing, and more. Contact the volunteer coordinator to get involved. You can also talk directly to your classroom teacher to find out what help is needed to support the classroom. Parent Council/Head Parent/Lead ParentsThe MMCS Parent Council membership consists of all the parents of MMCS. The Parent Council (PC) meets at the beginning, middle and end of each school, with occasional meetings in between on a per needs basis. These meetings are open to all MMCS community. The head parent, who is identified through a nomination and voting process, organizes and chairs PC meetings. The role of the head parent is to act as a liaison between, MMCS director, the Governing Council, and lead parents. Each classroom group identifies a lead parent who chairs a parent meeting two or three times during the school year, for that grade. The role of the lead parent is to support the teacher in the classroom through coordination of activities and events, and participate in bi-monthly meetings of all lead parents chaired by the head parent. |
