The MMCS version of Compassionate Campus is a program integrating socially effective and compassionate ways of human-to-human interactions campuswide inspired by a similar program developed by Bonnie River, former Director of Live Oak Charter School in Petaluma, Calif.
Ours is based on evolving neuroscience research substantiating the need for consistent positive modeling for effective emotional regulation essential both for social engagement and maximal academic success. It flows from the first three core principles of our charter: joy and security, universal empathy and school life as real life.
Currently, parent volunteers are trained in a small group course about how to model emotional regulation based on the lead of modern neuroscience. Future components of the program will include developing ally relationships to facilitate emotionally charged conversations--student-to-student, student-to-adult and adult-to-adult, and developing a student government system using these same precepts and models.
Also, integrated throughout the curriculum will be social engagement lessons to deal with such issues as bullying, diversity, conflict resolution and more.
